The African Raptor Centre is a dedicated sanctuary focused on conserving our indigenous raptors. It plays a vital role in research, breeding, and rehabilitation projects that prioritize the well-being of these magnificent birds of prey.
Understanding the delicate balance of nature, most of the Centre’s efforts occur behind the scenes to protect wild birds and ensure they have the best chance of successful release back into their natural habitats.
Recently, the Centre faced the challenge of relocating its facility from Camperdown. Fortunately, they have found a new home. With the support of SMP and other donors, who provided all the necessary tunnels for housing the raptors, they have been able to continue their mission.
Now located at the Tala Collection Game Reserve, the Centre also serves as a safe haven for various captive-bred or “non-releasable rehabilitation” raptors. Visitors are warmly welcomed to experience the beauty of these incredible creatures up close within their species-specific enclosures.
Understanding the world of birds of prey and acknowledging the threats they face is essential for raptor conservation, and it is something we deeply care about. Research can truly make a difference when the findings are shared with the community, as awareness is the first step toward meaningful change. When people understand the importance of raptors and the conservation efforts surrounding them, it creates a strong foundation for successful protection strategies.
The team at the African Raptor Centre is dedicated to introducing these majestic birds to the public. Every day, specially trained raptors participate in flight displays that not only showcase their beauty but also create a connection between the audience and their wild counterparts. These experiences aim to inspire visitors of all ages to develop a genuine appreciation for the incredible diversity of raptors found in South Africa.
We invite you to join us in appreciating and learning about South Africa’s stunning aerial predators. Together, we can foster a deeper understanding and respect for these remarkable birds.
